The Family Basement You’ve Been Looking For

The Family Basement You’ve Been Looking For

Creative Design Construction Inc. is excited to announce a feature they received in the latest issue of Design NJ about a multipurpose basement they did in Allendale, NJ. Titled “A Bottle of Red, A Bottle of White: An Allendale Basement Suits Whatever Kind of Mood You’re In Tonight,” the article dives into the unique style and use of space in the basement meant to entertain those of all ages. Each project we take part in is special and this one is certainly no exception.

The basement belongs to John and Ariane Canavan, who were looking to turn their space into a play area for their young children, while also allowing a place for the adults. The 1,600-square-foot design space needed to be comfortable, yet practical. Creative Design took their requests into consideration and laid out a plan to construct a children’s playroom, a bar area, and a family sitting area.

The bar area contains a palate of dark and refined neutrals to give an urban feel, while the TV area is warm, and the children’s playroom is vivid and bold. Although they each have their own vibe, the rooms still flow nicely into one another. The linear movement from one room to another is broken up by strategically placed curves that create a softer transition, while a series of hard angles appear throughout.

Some interesting features include a floor-to-ceiling wine rack and the decorative frosted-glass pocket doors that separate the adult area from the children’s area when needed. Also, the flooring used throughout the space is a vinyl disguised as wood made to hold up in a subterranean environment. It is free-floating, meaning it is not nailed or glued to the subfloor, allowing for expansion and contraction. That mixed with an anti-bacterial property make it extremely basement friendly!

Glen Lumia, the owner of Creative Design Construction Inc, says that the Canavan’s finished basement is “a space that grows with the family.”

Top 5 Reasons to Remodel Your Kitchen

It’s finally fall, which means cooler weather, more time spent indoors, and visiting family and friends for holidays. Are you embarrassed to host a gathering because of your outdated kitchen? It might be time for a remodel! Besides the look of your kitchen, here are a few other things to consider when deciding to remodel:

  1. Lack of space. Do your counters provide adequate space to prepare food? Are you cabinets and pantry big enough to store food? Do you have enough space to walk around in the kitchen? If you answered no to any of these questions, a kitchen remodel could be your solution.
  2. Layout disaster. Is your kitchen secluded from everyone else? Do you dream of having an open space to cook, entertain, and easily watch your children? Remodeling your kitchen gives you the potential to open up your space and create that dream layout.
  3. Outdated appliances. Are your appliances stuck in the 70s? You should look into replacing them; it could save you a lot of money in the long run.
  4. Resale value. The kitchen is the heart of the home and it is a huge factor when people are deciding to purchase a house. If your kitchen is outdated and falling apart, it might stay on the market longer than a home that has a remodeled kitchen.
  5. Gourmet kitchen. Although your kitchen is functional, it may not be quite up to your standards. If you would prefer to have a gourmet kitchen with luxury amenities, a remodel can provide that.

5 Benefits to Finishing Your Basement

Basements are one of the most overlooked potential for extra space in the home. Chances are your house has a basement that is unfinished. Maybe when you bought the house you had plans for a renovation but never got to it. Regardless, here are some benefits to finishing your basement:

  1. More space. Finishing your basement adds extra space to your home. On average, basements add at least a third of space to your home. It’s up to you to decide what you want to use the space for. Perhaps, the extra space could be used for a family room, home office, or guest room.
  2. Adds value. Since a finished basement adds extra space to your home, it increases the value.
  3. Creative reign. As the basement is located downstairs, you don’t have to worry too much about matching the style to the upstairs. Let your imagination run wild and create the basement of your dreams.
  4. Mother-in-law quarters. Sometimes, we need our parents’ help taking care of a growing family. Finishing your basement will provide a comfortable living situation for extended family. You could add a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen to create a mini apartment.
  5. Comfort and organization. Basements are usually the most insulated room in your house, making it very cold in the summer and warm in the winter. If you use your basement for storage, you can build a closet to hide and organize your clutter.

Is a Home Addition Right for You?

It’s Monday morning and your family is running around to get ready for work and school. You are one bathroom short and have a ton of things scattered around the house. Is this your reality? It might be time to consider a home addition. Here are some things you should think about:

  1. More space, less cost. Although the upfront cost is expensive, it is typically cheaper to build an addition than purchase a new home that already has the space you need. Adding space to commonly used living spaces can be extremely beneficial.
  2. Room additions are best. When thinking about building an addition, you should utilize your resources wisely. Finished basements are an option, however, it depends on what type of basement you have. If your basement has no windows, you might want to add on a room instead. Something to consider is adding a room onto the house takes away some yard space.
  3. 100% creativity. Adding onto your house enables you to create a personal touch to your home. You are in control of what the space looks like, from start to finish.
  4. Add value to your home. Adding space to your home could increase the value. If that is your goal, it’s important to do some research beforehand.
  5. Luxury living. Creating additional living space allows you to add luxurious items. If you’ve always wanted his and her sinks or a bathtub and master closet, an addition will provide that for you.

5 Questions to Ask Before Doing an Addition

Are you constantly dreaming about a home that isn’t cluttered, a morning routine that isn’t hectic, and a space to relax in or hang out with your family? A home addition might be the answer for you. No matter if you are just starting to think about adding onto your home or you’ve been dreaming about it for months, here are some questions to ask yourself prior to starting the project.

  1. How would you build your dream house? No house is perfectly the way you imagined it, if you didn’t build it yourself. Building an addition to your home allows you to create a space the way you’ve pictured.
  2. Will the project add value to your home? Always consider the resale value of your home, even if you don’t have immediate plans to sell it. Additions are very expensive, however, they could provide some value to your home.
  3. Could you receive the benefits at a lower-cost? If adding onto your house proves to be too expensive, there are other options. Sometimes all it takes is reimagining a space or finishing an attic or basement to create the extra space you need.
  4. Are there zoning restrictions? Before building an addition, you need to research zoning restrictions. Most towns have restrictions as to how far and high your building can be. Be sure to check the requirements before getting too invested in your dream home.
  5. How will the extra space tie into the house? You don’t want your addition to stick out like a sore thumb. Adding space to a home needs to look like it fits in with the general style of the home.

Bathroom Remodel Levels

So you’re planning to remodel your bathroom – updating the look, adding some value, more functionality, maybe more storage and amenities. Sounds simple enough?

The scope of your project will depend upon a variety of factors. Of course, the big one is your budget. You should also consider how long you’ve been in your home, and how long you plan to stay.  Remodeling a bathroom from the 90’s will be a completely different task than overhauling a 1920’s bathroom.

Mid-to-Upper Range Bathroom Remodel

$10,000 to $35,000

Location, materials, cost of labor, and project scope play a role in how much the remodel will cost. For example, the average bathroom remodel in New York will cost just over $32,000, while in Mississippi it is just under $14,000.

You can also make a few more adjustment with respect to your bathroom layout. For example you could swap in a slightly smaller bathtub for a larger shower, or relocate a sink.

Countertops: A custom piece of granite, marble, or quartz

Cabinets: Semi-custom pieces with higher-end finishes, glazed instead of just stained, and decorative details like cabinet legs or intricate door panels.

Plumbing: Moderate adjustments can be made to the plumbing at this level, like moving the faucets or shower, however the toilet will likely need to remain in the original spot.

Fixtures: Fixtures with higher quality copper or bronze inside will last longer and are available.

Tile: You can upgrade to porcelain, which is more durable than ceramic and is also slip resistant. This will also afford you more size, color, and design options. You can also have the option of doing more interesting borders and accent tiles.

Walls: Add a real bead-board, or use your creativity with some different materials.

Who to Hire: You will likely need a team that includes a designer, plumber, tiler, painter, and other specialists that are not typically done by the average self-remodeler.

The Deluxe Bathroom Remodel

$30,000 – $100,000

This would be considered a “Full Gut Job.” Toilets, showers, sink, and vanities can be re-arranged and even adjacent rooms can be accessed to add space.

Cabinetry: Solid wood construction with custom finishes is available.

Tile: Granite, limestone, or natural marble are all more labor intensive and difficult to cut.

Plumbing: Use of high-end finishes and parts.

Amenities: Saunas, steam showers, and radiant floor heating can be integrated into the design.

Who to Hire: Depending upon the scope of your project, you may need an architect to ensure you footprint is properly engineered. A variety of subcontractors would also be possible, from masons, tile layers, plumbers, electricians, and carpenters. For this size project, it’s a good idea to hire a General Contractor with some experience in handling such a large endeavor.

A deluxe bath remodel is good fit if you have the funds, as you are getting the bathroom you really want. If you’re planning to stay put for some time, putting this type of money back into your house will make it more enjoyable for you.

Top 7 Ways to Expand Your House

After living in your home for a few years, you might start to find that it is not big enough for your growing needs. It’s not as though you hate the space, you are just frustrated with the lack of space. The last thing you want to do is move, this is where building an expansion to your home helps. Here are the top 7 ways to expand your home.

  1. Build out into the backyard. This is probably the most common addition. Typically, extending out into the yard means a bigger kitchen or family room is added. The modernity of contracting today enables you to take advantage of indoor-outdoor living.
  2. Take into account the scale. A large addition might be disproportional to the existing space if you don’t take into account the scale. You should break down the additional spaces into parts that relate to the original structure of the home.
  3. Create a jewel box. This addition allows you to enjoy the outdoors, inside. Building a space with a lot of windows is very beautiful and unique.
  4. Express yourself with a small statement. You don’t have to get stuck with building the same cookie-cutter addition on the back of your house. Instead, get creative and express yourself in a new way with a unique addition.
  5. Go big. If you have a large budget, you can go all out with a large addition. It can be modern, your style, and perfectly usable.
  6. Add a pavilion. If you have a big home lot, you have the opportunity to build a pavilion away from the existing structure. This enables you to be creative and build something new that complements the original structure.
  7. Build up. Another option is to add a second floor. This is useful if you have a smaller lot and can’t build out.

7 Design Tips to Know Before Remodeling Your Bathroom

You moved into your dream home, the only problem is the bathroom needs to be remodeled. If you are thinking about doing it yourself or want to consult a professional, you should be aware of these design tips:

  1. Cost. Although you have a vision of what you hope the bathroom looks like, you need to establish a budget. Take a look at the size of your bathroom, the quality of materials you want, and if you will be doing the renovation yourself when determining the cost.
  2. Hide the toilet. You don’t want to place the toilet front and center of the bathroom. The reason being, bathroom doors are most likely left open when not being used. If you have guests at your house you don’t want the first thing they see to be the toilet.
  3. Incorporate a vintage touch. If your bathroom has some vintage tile, it might be easier and cost efficient to keep the tile.
  4. Learn standard bathroom dimensions. Understanding dimensions for a standard bathroom will help when planning your remodel.
  5. Choose your vanity wisely. Think about how much space you need, the size of your bathroom, and countertop material. This will help save time in the morning and keep maintenance issues at bay.
  6. Splurge on luxury. Everyone is on a budget; you’ll find that you can work around it to incorporate luxurious items. If you add one thing that is a bit pricier to a small area in your bathroom, you’ll make the space feel a bit more luxurious.
  7. Check your tile size. Double and triple check your tile size. The last thing you’ll want is to order the wrong size.
